Home Owner Pet Insurance Can Pay Civil Liabilities

18

In some cases, a person may subscribe to home owner pet insurance to protect against liability if the animal should attack a visitor or someone just walking by the house. Despite the difficulty in anticipating an aggressive nature surfacing in any animal, even the most docile of pets have been known to go on the offensive, making home owner pet insurance a bargain, compared to the legal and civil liability in the event of an attack.

Part of being a responsible pet owner is being responsible for your pet and for a home owner pet insurance can save a lot of money on consequential damages caused by your pet. Renters especially should consider home owner pet insurance in the event the pet damages the home in which you are renting. A pet having an accident on the run can ruin more than a rug or carpet. Liquid accidents can seep into the underlying wood and make it difficult to remove the odor often associated with such accidents. When the renter moves, any damages caused by the pet will be the responsibility of the pet owner.

Even owning your own home, a pet can leave you open for damages to other people or property if it is deemed your pet caused the damage. For example, a friend stops by to show off their brand new car and your dog jumps up to the vehicle and scratches the paint. With home owner pet insurance, the damage can be repaired with you paying only the deductible. Since it was your pet, being in the driveway does not remove the liability for the damage, as the friend is typically invited into your home.

Responsibility Does Not End At Property Line

Many states and communities have enacted laws concerning damage by pets that owners allow to roam free. If the pet damages someone elses property because its owner allowed it to run loose in the neighborhood, the owner remains responsible and home owner pet insurance should cover any damages above the deductible of the policy. Additionally, if the pet causes injuries to another person, the medical bills can quickly add up and without home owner pet insurance the owner could end up with a large bill for injuries caused by the pet.

While it may seem outlandish, if the pet runs into the roadway and a driver swerving to miss the animals ends up crashing their vehicle, the pet owner could still be held liable for any damage or injuries incurred in the accident. By carrying home owner pet insurance the owner could be saved from facing large bills and potential legal and civil action.
